What Is a Top-Up Degree? How a One-Year BA (Hons) Works in the UK
You have an HND, or you are about to finish one. Someone mentions a "top-up degree" and says you could have a full degree in a year. It sounds almost too good to be true.
So what is a top-up degree? It is the final year of a bachelor's degree, taken on its own. You join at the last step because your earlier study already covers the first two years. When you pass, you get the same BA (Hons) as someone who studied for three years.
This guide explains how a top-up degree works in the UK, who can apply, what it costs and whether it is right for you.
What is a top-up degree, in plain words?
A normal UK bachelor's degree has three years. Each year sits at a level.
- Year one is Level 4.
- Year two is Level 5.
- Year three is Level 6.
The level is just a way of saying how hard the work is. Level 6 is the standard of a final year at university.
An HND, or Higher National Diploma, covers Level 4 and Level 5. So after an HND, the only part of a degree you are missing is Level 6. A top-up degree is that missing year. You "top up" what you already have into a full honours degree.
Some people also top up from a foundation degree, which also finishes at Level 5.
Is a top-up degree a real degree?
Yes. This is the question people ask most, so here it is plainly.
When you pass a top-up, you are awarded a BA (Hons) by the university that runs it. The certificate does not say "top-up" in big letters. It is the same degree title a three-year student gets. You can put it on your CV as a BA (Hons), and you can use it to apply for jobs or a master's degree that ask for a degree.
Your degree class, such as a 2:1 or a first, is usually worked out from your top-up year alone. That means your final grades rest on this one year, so it pays to take it seriously from week one.
Who can apply for a top-up degree?
Most top-up degrees ask for a Level 5 qualification in a related subject. For a business top-up, that usually means an HND in Business, or a close subject like Hospitality Management.
Some also look at your grades. A pass or merit profile is often fine. Some ask for more. Always check the exact entry rules with the college.

How long does a top-up degree take?
Full time, it takes one academic year. That is usually around nine months of teaching and assessment.
Some colleges also run it with blended learning. Blended learning means some classes happen in person and some happen online. It can make the year easier to fit around a job, though you still need to put in the hours.
What do you study on a top-up degree?
It depends on the subject, but a business top-up usually looks at the big picture. At Level 6, you are expected to think like a manager, not just follow a process.
Common topics include these.
- Business strategy and how firms plan for the future.
- Finance for managers, such as reading accounts and judging risk.
- Leadership and managing change.
- Ethics and doing business responsibly.
- A research project, where you pick a question and investigate it yourself.
The research project is often the biggest single piece of work. It is a chance to dig into something you care about, such as a problem at your own workplace.

How is a top-up degree different from the HND?
The work gets deeper. At HND level, you often explain how something works. At Level 6, you are asked to judge it. Is this the best choice? What are the risks? What would you do instead, and why?
You also read more. You are expected to use books and journal articles to back up your points and reference them properly.
It is a step up, but it is a fair one. Your HND has already taught you how to write assignments, meet deadlines and work in groups. The top-up builds on all of that.
How much does a top-up degree cost, and can you get student finance?
Fees vary between colleges and universities, so check the current figure with each one.
The good news is that most UK students can get student finance for a top-up. In England, a tuition fee loan pays your course fees straight to the college. A maintenance loan can help with living costs.
You may still qualify even if you already had finance for your HND. That is because the top-up counts as the next part of the same degree route, not a second degree. Your own case depends on your past study, so check with Student Finance England before you apply.

Is a top-up degree worth it?
For many people, yes. Here are the main reasons.
Lots of job adverts ask for a degree. A top-up lets you meet that rule with one more year, not three.
It opens the door to more study. With a BA (Hons), you can apply for a master's degree or some graduate schemes.
It can help your pay. Management and head office jobs often favour people with a full degree.
It is cheaper and quicker than starting again. You do not repeat what you already know.
It is not the right move for everyone. If you already have a good job and your employer does not care about degrees, you might gain more from another year of experience. That is a real choice, and both paths are fine.

- Check your HND grades and units. Keep your certificate or transcript to hand.
- Pick a top-up in a subject that follows on from your HND.
- Contact the college and ask about entry rules and start dates.
- Send your application. At many colleges you apply directly, not through UCAS.
- Start your student finance form on the same day.
- Go to your interview or offer meeting, if there is one.
