Finishing a Business HND means you hold a Level 5 qualification that qualifies you for skilled employment. You could start applying for jobs immediately, or you could continue for one more year and complete a BA (Hons) degree.
Both routes suit different individuals depending on their goals and circumstances. The content below outlines the advantages of each option, the structure of the top-up year, and the key factors to consider when deciding which path is right for you.
What a top-up year involves
A BA (Hons) top-up is a one-year Level 6 programme that converts your HND into a full bachelor's degree. You have already completed 240 credits at Levels 4 and 5 during your HND. The top-up adds 120 credits at Level 6, bringing you to 360 credits in total—the same as a standard three-year degree.
At LCK Academy, the BA (Hons) Business and Management top-up is delivered in partnership with the University of Portsmouth. You will study six modules across two teaching blocks, covering strategic management, responsible business, research methods, and contemporary issues in product development. You will also complete an independent study project focusing on a real business, ethical, or sustainability issue.
The result is a University of Portsmouth degree with the same academic standing as studying on campus. The programme uses a blended learning model with approximately 12 hours of timetabled teaching per week and an additional 23 hours of independent study. The academic year runs from September to June.
The modules you'll study
The top-up programme consists of six 20-credit modules:
| Teaching Block | Module | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Block 1 | Contemporary Issues in Product and Service Development | Innovation models, sustainability impacts, globalisation in product and service development |
| Block 1 | Developing Your Research Skills | Research methods and preparation for independent study projects |
| Block 1 | Strategic Finance for Managers | Financial and management accounting for strategic decision-making |
| Block 2 | Independent Study Project | Supervised capstone project on a real ethical, sustainability, or business issue |
| Block 2 | Responsible and Sustainable Business | Ethics, CSR, stakeholder theory, law, economics, and strategy |
| Block 2 | Strategic Management | Strategic frameworks applied to national and global business contexts |
Assessment methods include coursework, business reports (40–60%), presentations and group projects (20–30%), research projects, examinations (10–20%), case study analysis, and reflective journals.
What you learn during the top-up
The Level 6 year develops advanced business capabilities that extend beyond HND-level study, including:
- Applying advanced business and management theories to real-world scenarios
- Developing strategic thinking and decision-making capabilities
- Understanding contemporary issues in product and service development
- Conducting independent research on business ethics and sustainability
- Leading responsibly and sustainably in business environments
- Analysing and managing financial strategies for business growth
- Communicating complex business concepts effectively
- Demonstrating entrepreneurial and innovative thinking
These skills are particularly relevant for senior roles, management positions, and strategic planning responsibilities.
When starting work makes sense
Taking a job immediately after your HND may be appropriate in several situations.
You have clear job opportunities available
If you already have a role lined up, or you work in a sector where HND qualifications provide strong access to the positions you want, entering the job market may be the most efficient next step.
HND graduates in London may typically begin on salaries between £26,000 and £34,000 in roles such as operations coordinator, assistant manager, business administrator, or marketing coordinator. With one to two years of experience, progression into supervisory or managerial positions often leads to salaries in the region of £35,000 to £45,000.
You want to test your skills in the workplace
While your HND provides strong theoretical foundations, applying that knowledge in real business environments can help clarify which roles and sectors suit you best. This experience may confirm that you can progress without further study—or it may highlight areas where a degree would support your long-term goals.
The sector you're targeting values experience over qualifications
In some industries, practical experience carries more weight than formal qualifications. Smaller businesses, startups, entrepreneurial ventures, and certain hospitality or retail sectors place significant emphasis on demonstrated ability and initiative.
If your ambitions involve self-employment, freelancing, or working in results-focused environments, immediate work experience may prove more valuable than additional academic study.
When the top-up makes sense
In other cases, completing the top-up degree is likely the stronger option.
Degree requirements limit your opportunities
Many large organisations, graduate schemes, multinational employers, and public sector bodies list a bachelor's degree as an essential criterion. Automated recruitment systems may also filter out applicants without degrees. Completing the top-up removes these barriers.
You want to maintain academic momentum
Continuing directly into the top-up year can be easier than returning to education after a long break, particularly if you currently feel confident in your academic abilities and study habits.
You have specific academic or research interests
The independent study project allows you to explore a topic in depth, developing skills useful for postgraduate study or senior professional roles requiring research and analytical capability.
Student Finance makes the degree accessible
Top-up degrees are eligible for Student Finance England support. Tuition Fee Loans cover the full course fees, and Maintenance Loans support living costs. Repayments begin only once your income exceeds the repayment threshold set by the UK Government.

Graduate employers and higher starting salaries
Some sectors offer noticeably higher starting salaries for degree holders compared to HND graduates. While an HND can lead to salaries in the £26,000–£34,000 range, many degree-level roles begin closer to £30,000–£40,000, particularly in finance, consultancy, professional services, and larger organisations.
Career pathways include business management and operations, strategic planning and development, financial management and analysis, human resources management, marketing and business development, supply chain and operations management, entrepreneurship, and management consulting.
Factors to consider
Both HND holders and top-up graduates progress into strong business careers. However, the two routes may lead to different types of opportunities. HND graduates often secure roles that value practical experience and hands-on skills. A completed degree, in contrast, broadens access to employers that recruit specifically at graduate level and may offer more structured progression pathways.
Graduates progress into a wide range of business-related roles across sectors including banking and finance, management and consulting, technology and digital services, the public sector, and professional services such as HR, operations, marketing, and administration.
Your career goals
Consider the types of roles you aspire to and whether they typically require a degree. Reviewing job descriptions, exploring industry pathways, and speaking with professionals can help clarify expectations.
Your financial situation
Reflect on whether you can manage another year of study with Student Finance support, or whether immediate income is a priority. Balance short-term financial pressures against potential long-term career benefits.
Your sector and job market
Expectations vary significantly by industry. Larger corporate employers, finance, consulting, law, and public sector roles often expect degree-level education, while smaller businesses, hospitality, retail, creative industries, and startups may prioritise experience.
Your academic confidence
Consider how comfortable you feel with academic study. Some students thrive in structured academic environments; others prefer learning through work.
Timing and life stage
Determine whether now is the most practical time to study, or whether other life commitments take priority. Many students later return to education after gaining work experience.
How employers view HNDs vs degrees
Different employers value qualifications in different ways.
SMEs and smaller businesses often focus on practical skills and relevant experience.
Large corporations and graduate schemes typically require degrees as part of their recruitment criteria.
Public sector employers may require degree-level qualifications for certain roles.
Professional services (law, accountancy, consulting, finance) almost always expect degree-level education.
Startups and entrepreneurial environments prioritise initiative, adaptability, and demonstrable ability.
If you decide to work first
Choosing to work after your HND does not close the door to further study. Many students return to complete top-up degrees after gaining experience.
To make this route effective:
- Build relevant experience by choosing roles aligned with your longer-term goals
- Continue learning through professional development
- Stay connected with your training provider
- Review your progress regularly
- Save where possible in case you choose to return to study later
