Growing a business requires a different set of skills from starting one. The ability to plan strategically, manage resources effectively, understand what is driving performance, and make decisions that sustain momentum over time are capabilities that do not develop automatically with experience. They are built through structured learning, and the HND Business (Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management) at LCK Academy develops them deliberately across a curriculum designed around entrepreneurship and small business management.
The programme is a Level 5 qualification delivered in London that gives you the analytical frameworks and practical knowledge to think about business growth in a structured, informed way.
The HND Business (Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management)
The HND Business (Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management) provides a comprehensive foundation in how modern organisations operate. The curriculum spans marketing, finance, people management, operations, strategy and research, with entrepreneurship and small business management running as a consistent thread throughout both years of the programme.
Throughout the course the focus is on applying knowledge rather than simply absorbing it. You develop the ability to analyse business situations, make well-reasoned decisions, and understand how different functions of a business connect to its ability to grow and sustain that growth over time.

Business Growth as a Plannable Process
Growth is sometimes treated as something that happens to a business rather than something that is planned and managed. In practice, the businesses that grow sustainably are those that approach growth strategically, understanding where their opportunities lie, what resources they need, how to manage the risks involved, and how to build the operational capacity to support expansion.
The programme develops the thinking and practical skills that underpin this kind of strategic approach to growth. Whether you are planning to launch a new venture in London, grow an existing small business, or develop the skills to support growth within an organisation, it gives you the tools to approach these challenges with greater confidence and analytical rigour.
The Core Skills You Develop
Planning for Growth
The curriculum includes a dedicated unit on planning for growth, which covers the strategic and operational dimensions of scaling a business. You study how businesses evaluate growth opportunities, develop plans that balance ambition with resource constraints, and manage the risks that come with expansion.
This unit develops a practical, grounded approach to growth planning. You learn how to assess whether a business is ready to scale, what needs to be in place before pursuing growth, and how to develop plans that are realistic and achievable rather than aspirational but undeliverable.
Business Strategy
Growth planning and business strategy are closely connected. The Business Strategy unit develops your capacity to analyse competitive environments, understand how businesses create and sustain advantage, and evaluate strategic options against long-term objectives.
For anyone focused on business growth, strategic thinking is what separates growth that builds something sustainable from growth that creates fragility. This unit gives you the analytical tools to think about markets, competition and positioning in a structured way.
Managing and Running a Small Business
The course includes a dedicated unit on managing and running a small business, which covers the operational and management realities of small business ownership. You study how small businesses manage cash flow, control costs, handle staffing, and maintain the operational discipline that growth requires.
This unit is particularly relevant to growth planning because it develops your understanding of what needs to work well at the current scale of a business before it can be grown successfully. Managing operational capacity effectively is one of the most important factors in sustaining growth over time.
Launching a New Venture
The Launching a New Venture unit covers the practical steps involved in taking a business idea from plan to reality. You study how to develop a business plan, secure resources, manage the early stages of a venture, and build the foundations that support future growth.
For anyone planning to start a business with growth ambitions, this unit provides a structured framework for thinking about launch in a way that sets the business up for the growth phase rather than just getting it off the ground.
Identifying Entrepreneurial Opportunities
Growth often comes from identifying new opportunities within or adjacent to an existing business. The programme develops your ability to recognise and evaluate entrepreneurial opportunities systematically, giving you the frameworks to assess whether a potential growth direction is viable and worth pursuing.
This unit connects directly to growth planning because it develops the commercial intelligence that underpins good growth decisions. Knowing how to evaluate an opportunity rigorously, rather than pursuing growth for its own sake, is what makes growth planning effective.
Accounting Principles and Financial Awareness
Growth requires financial resources and financial discipline. The Accounting Principles unit develops financial literacy, giving you the grounding to understand the financial dimensions of a growth plan. This includes assessing whether a business can afford to grow, managing cash flow during a growth phase, and evaluating the return on growth investments.
Management of Human Resources
Growing a business means growing a team, and people management becomes more complex as a business scales. The curriculum covers human resource management, developing your understanding of how to attract, develop and retain the people a growing business needs, and how to manage the cultural and structural changes that come with expansion.
Leadership and Management
Effective leadership becomes more important as a business grows and the complexity of managing people, operations and strategy increases. The Leadership and Management unit develops the practical leadership skills that growth-oriented managers need, from setting direction and building culture to delegating effectively and managing performance.
Organisational Behaviour Management
The Organisational Behaviour Management unit develops your understanding of how teams, cultures and structures affect business performance. As businesses grow, maintaining the culture, communication and collaboration that made them successful becomes harder and more important. This unit develops the thinking that helps managers navigate these challenges.
Research Project
The HND Business (Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management) includes a Pearson-set research project unit that requires you to investigate a real business issue or challenge in depth. For anyone interested in business growth, this provides a structured opportunity to research a specific aspect of growth strategy, market development or small business management and develop well-evidenced recommendations.
How the Programme Is Assessed
Rather than relying on exams, the programme uses assessment formats that reflect how professionals actually work:
- Written reports and business analyses that develop your ability to research a context, structure your findings and present recommendations clearly
- Individual and group presentations that build confidence in communicating ideas and handling questions
- Pitches and proposals that develop your capacity to advocate for a course of action and defend your thinking
- Portfolios and project work that demonstrate applied skills developed over time
- Essays and write-ups that develop extended analytical writing
Feedback is built into the process at multiple stages, giving you regular opportunities to develop before the final assessment point in each module.
