What Is a BTEC HND? Who Awards It and Is It Recognised by Employers and Universities?
You find a course you like. The page says "Pearson BTEC Level 5 HND". That is a lot of words in one line. What do they all mean?
People ask us this all the time. What is a BTEC HND? Is it a proper qualification? Who actually awards it? Will an employer take it seriously?
This guide answers those questions in plain words. It covers what BTEC means, who Pearson is, what Level 5 means, how the course is graded, and what the qualification is worth once you have it.
What is a BTEC HND, in plain words?
Let us take the name apart one piece at a time.
HND stands for Higher National Diploma. It is a two-year course of higher education, usually in a work-related subject such as business or hospitality. It sits at Level 5, which is the same standard as the second year of a university degree.
BTEC is a brand name for a family of work-related qualifications. The letters once stood for the Business and Technology Education Council. That council no longer exists, but the name stuck. Today, BTEC simply means a practical course that is marked on coursework and built around real jobs.
Pearson is the company that owns the BTEC brand and awards the qualification. More on that below.
So a Pearson BTEC Level 5 HND is a two-year, work-related diploma at degree level, awarded by Pearson. That is the whole thing.
Who awards a BTEC HND?
An awarding body is the organisation that sets the standard for a qualification and puts its name on your certificate. The college teaches you. The awarding body checks the college and signs off your award.
For BTEC Higher Nationals, the awarding body is Pearson. Pearson is one of the largest education companies in the world. It also owns Edexcel, which runs GCSEs and A Levels in England. So if you sat an Edexcel exam at school, you have already met Pearson.
Pearson writes the course content for every BTEC HND and decides what counts as a pass. Every college that offers the course has to be approved by Pearson first, and Pearson checks marked work from each college every year.
In England, Pearson is itself regulated by Ofqual, the government body that watches over qualifications and exams. This means a BTEC HND is a regulated qualification on the national framework.
Not every HND is a BTEC. In Scotland, HNDs are awarded by the SQA, which is the Scottish Qualifications Authority. A few universities also award their own HNDs. If a course page does not say who awards the qualification, ask.
What level is a BTEC HND?
A BTEC HND is a Level 5 qualification.
In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, every qualification sits on a ladder from Entry Level up to Level 8. GCSEs are Level 2. A Levels are Level 3. The three years of a full degree are Levels 4, 5 and 6.
An HND covers Level 4 in the first year and Level 5 in the second year. Our guide to what Level 4 and Level 5 mean explains those steps in more detail.
An HND is worth 240 credits. A credit is a unit of study time. One credit is about ten hours of learning, including class time and your own study. A full three-year degree is 360 credits, so an HND gets you two-thirds of the way there.
A Higher National Certificate, or HNC, is the one-year version. It covers Level 4 only and is worth 120 credits. Our post on the difference between an HNC and an HND compares the two.
How is a BTEC HND different from a university degree?
The level is the same as the first two years of a degree. The way you learn is different.
A BTEC HND is built around work. The units have names such as Managing a Successful Business Project or Managing the Customer Experience. Assignments ask you to look at real businesses and solve real problems.
Most BTEC HNDs have no written exams. You are assessed through assignments, reports, presentations and projects. Each piece of work is handed in during the year, so there is no single make-or-break day.
Many students study an HND while working, and college timetables tend to be built in compact blocks for this reason. Our guide to studying an HND while working full time shows how people manage it. For the full list of units, see our post on every unit on the HND in Business.
How is a BTEC HND graded?
Each unit is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction.
To pass a unit, you have to meet every pass criterion listed in the assignment brief. To get a Merit, you also meet the merit criteria. To get a Distinction, you meet them all.
At the end of the course, your unit grades are added up to give an overall grade for the whole HND. That overall grade is also a Pass, a Merit or a Distinction.
If you miss the mark on an assignment, you usually get one chance to fix it and hand it in again. This is called a referral. Our guide to HND assessment and grading explains how the grades are worked out, and our post on what happens if you fail a unit covers the referral process.
Do employers recognise a BTEC HND?
Yes. HNDs have been around since the 1920s, and employers know what they are.
Large companies often set a Level 5 qualification or a degree as the entry bar for management and head office roles. A BTEC HND meets the Level 5 bar.
Employers also tend to like the practical side. A graduate with a BTEC HND has already written business reports and costed real projects, often while holding down a job.
Because Pearson delivers BTEC courses in many countries, the qualification is also known abroad. This matters in hospitality, where big hotel groups move staff between countries. Our post on international hospitality careers covers that side.
For a fuller answer on how employers compare an HND and a degree, read our guide on whether an HND is equivalent to a degree.
Do universities accept a BTEC HND?
Yes. This is one of the biggest advantages of the qualification.
Because an HND covers Levels 4 and 5, universities can admit HND graduates straight into the final year of a degree. This is called a top-up. You study one more year at Level 6 and finish with a full BA (Hons), the same degree a three-year student gets.
Most universities ask for a Merit or a Distinction overall for top-up entry, and they like the HND subject to match the degree subject. Our guide to what a top-up degree is explains how the final year works, and our post on credit transfer and university progression covers how the credits carry over.
Is a BTEC HND the same as a BTEC National?
No, and this is a common mix-up.
A BTEC National is a Level 3 course. It is taken at sixth form or college in place of A Levels, usually by 16 to 18 year olds. You might see it called a BTEC Extended Diploma.
A BTEC Higher National is a Level 4 or Level 5 course. It is higher education, taken after A Levels or after some years at work. It is the one you can get student finance for.
The word "Higher" is the giveaway. If the course page says Higher National, it is degree-level study.
Can you get student finance for a BTEC HND?
Yes, if the course is at an approved college and you meet the usual rules. A BTEC HND is a designated higher education course. UK students can usually get a tuition fee loan to cover the fees, and full-time students can also apply for a maintenance loan to help with living costs.
You apply through Student Finance England, or the equivalent body in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. Our guide to student finance for adult learners on an HND goes through it step by step.
What do you need to get onto a BTEC HND?
Entry rules are set by the college. Most ask for A Levels or a similar Level 3 course, around 48 UCAS tariff points, or relevant work experience. UCAS tariff points are a way of turning grades into a number so that different qualifications can be compared. Our post on getting onto a business HND without A Levels explains what counts as experience.
Frequently asked questions
Is a BTEC HND a degree?
Not a full one. It is a Level 5 higher education qualification, equal to the first two years of a degree. Add a one-year top-up and you have a full BA (Hons).
Who awards a BTEC HND?
Pearson. The college teaches the course, and Pearson sets the standard and issues the certificate.
What does BTEC stand for?
It stood for the Business and Technology Education Council. Today it is just the brand name for Pearson's work-related qualifications.
Is a BTEC HND hard?
It is degree-level work, so it takes effort. But there are usually no exams, the assignments are practical, and your tutor supports you through each one.
