How Blended Learning Fits Around a Career in Business

Gaining a formal business qualification while maintaining a career has historically required a significant compromise somewhere. Full-time study means stepping back from work. Evening classes can stretch across years without a clear sense of momentum. Distance learning can feel isolated without regular structured contact with tutors and peers.

Blended learning addresses all of this by combining online sessions with regular in-person teaching, giving students the flexibility to study around employment while maintaining the structure and contact that make a qualification genuinely valuable.

LCK Academy offers three business programmes delivered in this way, each designed for people at different points in their career and education:

What Blended Learning Involves

Blended learning combines online teaching with face-to-face sessions, giving students the flexibility of remote study alongside the structure of regular in-person classes. The two formats work together rather than operating separately:

  • Online sessions cover academic content across the working week
  • In-person classes provide group discussion, practical exercises, and direct tutor interaction
  • Material covered online is built on and applied during face-to-face teaching

For the HND programmes at LCK Academy, online sessions run on Wednesdays and Thursdays, with in-person teaching at the Harrow Weald campus on Sundays. The timetable is built around the reality that most students are already in employment, allowing study to sit alongside a working week rather than competing with it.

The Practical Benefits of Studying This Way

Studying through a blended learning model gives working professionals access to a full Level 5 or Level 6 qualification without the need to take a career break or significantly reduce working hours. There are several practical advantages worth considering:

  • Income is maintained throughout the programme, which makes the overall cost of gaining the qualification more manageable
  • Academic content can be applied directly to real professional situations as you study, reinforcing both simultaneously
  • Student Finance is available to cover tuition fees for eligible students, reducing the upfront financial barrier considerably
  • The weekend in-person schedule means weekday working patterns are largely unaffected

Students also bring their professional experience directly into their studies. Someone working in a marketing role engages with units on marketing strategy from a position of practical knowledge. Someone running a small business brings direct commercial context to modules on entrepreneurship and strategic planning. That connection between workplace experience and academic content tends to strengthen both.

The Three Business Programmes at LCK Academy

LCK Academy offers three business qualifications through blended learning, which together form a clear progression pathway from Level 5 study through to a full bachelor's degree.

HND in Business: Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management

The HND in Business: Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management is a two-year Level 5 qualification carrying 240 credits, awarded by Pearson and delivered in partnership with University Centre Somerset College Group. The programme has a specialist focus on entrepreneurship and the practical skills involved in starting, managing, and growing a business.

Year One (Level 4) covers:

  • The Contemporary Business Environment
  • Marketing Processes and Planning
  • Management of Human Resources
  • Leadership and Management
  • Accounting Principles
  • Managing a Successful Business Project
  • Innovation and Commercialisation
  • Entrepreneurial Ventures

Year Two (Level 5) covers:

  • Research Project
  • Organisational Behaviour Management
  • Identifying Entrepreneurial Opportunities
  • Launching a New Venture
  • Managing and Running a Small Business
  • Business Strategy
  • Planning for Growth

This programme is particularly well suited to:

  • People who are already self-employed or working within an SME
  • Those who are planning to start a business and want a structured academic foundation
  • People who want to develop a deeper understanding of how small and growing businesses operate
  • Those interested in innovation, commercialisation, and identifying market opportunities

The curriculum covers the practical and strategic knowledge needed to build and sustain a business, alongside an understanding of how national culture and economic factors influence entrepreneurship and the role that social enterprises play in the wider economy.

The tuition fee for this programme is £8,000 per academic year.

BA Business Management Top-Up

The BA Business Management Top-Up is a one-year Level 6 programme delivered in partnership with the University of Portsmouth. It is designed for people who already hold a Level 5 qualification, such as an HND or Foundation Degree, and want to convert that into a full bachelor's degree in a single year of additional study.

The programme covers:

  • Advanced business knowledge and contemporary business practices
  • Strategic management and responsible business leadership
  • A strategic capstone project
  • Theoretical frameworks with practical business applications

The programme is validated by the University of Portsmouth and carries the same academic standing as their on-campus degree, with the added flexibility of blended learning delivery through LCK Academy. For students who complete either of the HND programmes above, the BA Top-Up represents a natural next step: a one-year programme that converts two years of Level 5 study into a full honours degree recognised by employers nationally and internationally.

A Clear Progression Pathway

One of the more practical aspects of studying at LCK Academy is the way the three programmes connect. Students who complete either HND in Business have a straightforward route into the BA Top-Up, building on 240 credits of Level 5 study to achieve a full bachelor's degree within three years total.

StageProgrammeLevelDuration
Step 1HND in Business (UoP) or HND Business: EntrepreneurshipLevel 52 years
Step 2BA Business Management Top-UpLevel 61 year
OutcomeBA (Hons) Business and ManagementLevel 63 years total

That pathway gives students the option to plan their study over a longer timeframe, completing an HND that has immediate career value while keeping a full degree as a reachable next step.

Learning Alongside Working Professionals

Because all three programmes are structured for people already in employment, the people studying alongside you bring genuine professional experience into the classroom. This shapes the learning experience in a number of ways:

  • Group discussions draw on real commercial situations rather than purely hypothetical ones
  • Case study analysis benefits from being tested against the practical knowledge people bring from their own roles
  • Workshop sessions reflect a wider range of industries and business contexts than a typical full-time student cohort

A student working in financial services engages with business strategy and finance modules from a different angle than someone in retail or the public sector. Those varied perspectives enrich the academic content throughout the programme.

Academic Support Throughout the Programme

LCK Academy provides a range of academic support sessions that run alongside all three programmes throughout the year:

  • Drop-in sessions available online with no appointment required
  • Coverage of academic writing, assignment approaches, and subject-specific questions
  • One-to-one tutorials for students who need more focused support on particular units
  • Dedicated academic writing sessions covering essay structure, argument development, and referencing

Assessment Methods

Assessment across all three programmes varies by unit and includes:

  • Written reports and essays
  • Individual and group presentations
  • Portfolios and write-ups
  • Role plays

The highest grade available is a Distinction. Students receive formative feedback at the midpoint of each module, giving them the opportunity to address any gaps before the final assessment point. Written feedback and guidance are provided after each summative assessment, with tutorial support available before the next module begins.

Student Finance

All three programmes at LCK Academy are eligible for Student Finance through Student Finance England. Eligible students can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan to cover annual tuition fees with no upfront payment required. Key points to be aware of:

  • Repayments only begin once income exceeds the government's repayment threshold
  • Monthly repayments are based on earnings rather than a fixed amount
  • The loan covers tuition fees and is paid directly to the institution

For full guidance on eligibility and how to apply, visit the Student Finance England website.

Who These Programmes Are For

The business programmes at LCK Academy are well suited to people who want to develop the knowledge and qualifications needed for management-level roles across business and commercial sectors. This includes:

  • People building on existing professional experience who want a recognised qualification to support career progression
  • Those looking to move into a more senior or specialist business role
  • People planning to start or grow their own business
  • Those who hold an HND or equivalent and want to complete a full bachelor's degree through the Top-Up route

Entry requirements for the HND programmes include a Level 3 qualification or relevant work experience, along with English language proficiency. The BA Top-Up requires a Level 5 qualification or equivalent. If you are unsure whether your background meets the requirements, the admissions team can advise before you apply.
