Beyond the Classroom: Why Careers and Employability Skills Matter

Getting a qualification is an important step towards a successful career, but knowing how to present your skills, communicate your strengths and navigate the job market is just as important.

On 14 October 2026, LCK Academy officially launched its Careers & Employability Hub — the Own Your Career and Growth Workshop, facilitated by Marriam Mughees. The session encouraged students to take ownership of their professional development and prepare for future career opportunities.

Understanding the skills employers value

Employers look beyond qualifications. Communication, teamwork, problem-solving, adaptability and organisation are transferable skills that can help candidates stand out.

Through reflection on education, employment, projects and volunteering, students can identify valuable skills and learn how to demonstrate them effectively in applications and interviews. If you are building a CV around an HND or top-up qualification, our guide to writing a CV with an HND shows where to put Level 5 study and how to turn assignments into evidence.

Creating a CV that stands out

A CV is often an employer's first impression of a candidate. The workshop explored how to highlight relevant experience, demonstrate achievements and tailor applications to specific roles.

Understanding job descriptions is equally important. Identifying the skills employers seek allows candidates to create more focused applications and communicate their suitability with confidence.

Using AI responsibly

Artificial intelligence can support CV writing and job applications when used thoughtfully. The workshop introduced structured prompting, including the SPUD approach, to help students improve their use of AI tools.

AI should support rather than replace personal judgement. Students should verify suggestions, edit generated content and ensure applications accurately reflect their real skills and experience.

Building confidence and taking ownership

Employability is not only about having the right documents. It is also about understanding your strengths, recognising areas for improvement and communicating your value.

Students were encouraged to approach their job search strategically: identify suitable opportunities, tailor applications and continually develop the skills employers need. These steps can help candidates feel better prepared for interviews, career transitions and professional progression.

How LCK Academy supports student success

At LCK Academy, education goes beyond academic qualifications. Our aim is to help students develop the knowledge, practical skills and confidence needed to progress professionally.

Through initiatives such as the Careers & Employability Hub, students can explore career development, strengthen their applications and better understand the expectations of today's job market.

Our career-focused learning approach, blended-learning environment and personal tutor support complement academic study by recognising students' individual ambitions and development needs. By providing opportunities to develop CV-writing skills, understand transferable skills and explore responsible AI use, we aim to help students become more informed and confident candidates.

Career development is an ongoing journey. Seeking feedback, reflecting on progress and continuing to learn can help students connect their education to real-world opportunities. For wider context on skills that travel across sectors, see our post on transferable skills from hospitality work — many of the same principles apply in business roles too.

Investing in your future starts today

Career success depends on more than qualifications. It also requires preparation, adaptability and the ability to communicate your experience effectively.

Attending employability sessions gives students practical insights, opportunities to ask questions and guidance on taking the next steps towards their ambitions.

Your future starts here. At LCK Academy, we want our students not only to earn their qualifications, but also to feel equipped to use them. Through our Careers & Employability Hub, we encourage students to recognise their potential, take ownership of their development and prepare for the opportunities ahead.

Your career starts with understanding your value, developing your skills and taking the initiative to grow. If you would like to find out more about our programmes or speak to the team, visit our contact page.
